Forage Friday: Orchardgrass

Orchardgrass is a cool season, perennial, bunchgrass, and is one of the earliest grasses to initiate growth in the spring.

Its primary use is for pasture and hay production and is highly palatable to all classes of of livestock. It is compatible with many legumes and with some grasses such as Perennial Ryegrass and Tall Fescue.

  • Seed can be broadcast at 12-15 pounds per acre or drilled at 8-12 pounds per acre
  • Best time to plant in the mountains: July 25- August 10 or March 20 – April 20
