Chatham Extension Gardener Workshop

Food scraps and yard trimmings together account for more than a quarter of household waste. Instead of trucking food waste to the landfill, use composting – the controlled decomposition of organic materials into a soil-like substance – to turn it into a valuable soil amendment!

Join Matt Jones Extension Horticulture Agent – N.C. Cooperative Extension, and Shannon Culpepper, Recycling and Education Specialist – Chatham County Solid Waste and Recycling, for a webinar and workshop on how to

In Matt’s presentation, participants will learn about the science of the decomposition process, understand the types of materials that are readily compostable, how to fine-tune the composting process by finding optimal temperature, moisture, aeration, and pile dimensions, and troubleshooting common composting problems. Shannon’s presentation will cover the methods and care of worm composting bins and how worms can transform your food waste into a valuable garden amendment. We will present research-based information from Rhonda Sherman, NC State Extension Specialist.

But wait, there’s more! Participants can receive a composting bin OR a complete, ready-to-start worm composting kit (LIMIT 1 PER HOUSEHOLD)! We are able to make this offer (an $85 value) thanks to Shannon’s hard work on a generous grant from the NC Department of Environmental Quality.

The workshop is scheduled for Thursday, April 8, 2021, 6–8 p.m. The workshop costs $15 per person. Registration and fee payment is required by April 2, 2021.

REGISTER and pay via Eventbrite

The course will be conducted as a live webinar via Zoom. See this link for Zoom system requirements.

Registrants can pick up their bins on Friday, April 9th from 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and Saturday, April 10 from 9–11 a.m. The pickup location is 28 County Services Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

This workshop is part of the Chatham Extension Gardener series of workshops that are open to everyone. It is also part of the Master Gardener℠ volunteers of Chatham County initial training program. For more information about becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer  of Chatham County, see our Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Chatham County page.
